FAQs

I know planning your wedding or special celebration cake comes with lots of questions!
Here you’ll find some quick answers, but if there’s something else you'd like to know, please email me at zoe@thecakequeenlincoln.co.uk to ask.

When should we book our wedding cake maker?

Generally, you should be looking to book your wedding cake a minimum of 12 months before your wedding. This gives time for you to have design and taster meetings with your chosen baker. At The Cake Queen, my diary is open 18 months in advance and some dates do book up straight away, so if you have an idea for who you would like to work with it is best to enquire early and secure your date then - you don't

Do we need to know what cake design we want to book?

No, you don't need to know what style or design of cake you want to be able to book in and secure your date. If you have some inspiration pictures for the sort of styles that you like, that can help to give you a rough idea on price, but don't worry too much as we meet for a full design consultation, where your cake will be designed specifically for you to complement your personal style and wedding decor.

Do we need to know what flavours we want?

No, you don't need to know what flavours you would like until closer to your wedding day. I offer taster boxes to order before booking, or you can sample cakes at wedding fairs and also our design meeting to help you decide on your chosen flavours for your wedding cake.

What size wedding cake will we need?

The size of cake you will need will depend on how many guests or portions that you would like to serve from your cake. For example, I offer three different sizes of three tier cakes, the smallest of which will serve up to 70 portions, the mid-size up to 95 and the largest three tier up to 120 portions. These are all with standard height tiers. You can see my cake size guide here.  We will talk about this together at our design meeting as you may decide to have taller or shallower tiers in your design too.

How much does a wedding cake cost?

As each wedding cake is bespoke, it is difficult to give a price list online. Only when we have confirmed your final design choices will I be able to give a final quote. Nevertheless, I do give guide prices based on inspiration pictures and you can also find my starting prices for plain decorated cakes here.  Additional costs to what is shown here will depend on additional design elements, such as flowers, stenciled details, cake stand hire, etc and you will also need to bear in mind any delivery and set up costs, which will depend on distance to your chosen venue.

How do we book our wedding cake

When you are ready to book, you can secure your date with me by paying a £100 non-refundable deposit. Nothing else is then due for payment until 4 weeks before delivery on your wedding day.

Do you offer cake tasters?

Yes. You will receive a complimentary taster box at your design consultation if you are booking a cake of 3-tiers or more. If you're having a smaller cake, these can be added to your order and enjoyed at our meeting too. Taster boxes can also be taken away to enjoy in your own time - you don't have to eat them at our meeting.

If you would like to try my cakes before booking then you can order a taster box here

What flavours should we have for our wedding cake?

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing your wedding cake flavours. You do not have to pick certain flavours just because it's what everyone expects / wants. That said, it is a good idea to have at least one tier in a crowd-pleasing flavour, such as my vanilla, raspberry and white chocolate, which a lot of couples choose as their largest tier. You can then opt for your own personal favourites in other tiers.

Do we have to have fruit cake for our wedding?

No, you don't have to have fruit cake for your wedding cake. I do offer it if you would like it though.

Can we have a different flavour for each tier?

Yes absolutely! I encourage you to choose a different flavour for each tier of your wedding cake. This means you can choose more of your favourites and gives a variety of choice for you and your guests. It also helps to ensure your cake is actually eaten as guests will go back to try each flavour.

What happens at our design meeting?

When we meet, I will ask you about your wedding planning so far and how you want your day to look and feel. We will look at your decor choices and stationery to guide me on any particular themes, colours or common patterns that we can bring into your cake design and ensure that it complements your day whilst also being a standout showpiece for your day. This is also a chance to enjoy your taster box and choose the flavours for your cake.

Our design meeting can either be in person at my home studio in Lincoln, or by video call - whichever suits you best.

How will we know what our wedding cake will look like?

I digitally sketch all of my wedding cake designs so that you can really see what your cake will look like. During our design stage, this makes it easy for any changes to be made until you are really happy with how your real-life cake will look.

Do you deliver our wedding cake to our venue?

Yes, I deliver all tiered cakes to your chosen wedding venue. Single tier cakes or cupcakes can be collected if you wish, or delivery can be arranged too. If I am delivering, I also liaise with your venue team to discuss timings and any special requirements to make everything stress-free for you too.

What time should we cut our wedding cake?

It's become the norm to cut your wedding cake at your evening reception so that all guests are there to see the tradition. But of course, you don't have to stick to this if you don't want to. If you're not having an influx of guests in the evening, why not cut the cake at your wedding breakfast - that way all of your guests are still in one place and they will be even more aware of it for when slices come out for them to enjoy. If you do wait until the evening, don't wait too late as you'll risk people forgetting about it and you may have a lot leftover.

Whatever time you do choose for the cake cutting, make sure someone announces that it is happening, and the same again when it is served to ensure that you and your guests know that it is available for them to enjoy.

Should we have a cake stand?

All of my cakes as standard are presented on an iced cake drum board for a professional finish and sturdy presentation, and as such can be placed directly onto your cake table and displayed without an additional stand. However, cake stands are a lovely addition to your display, elevating your cake and making it more of a feature and for better photo opportunities that you will cherish. Your venue may have their own stand that you can use, ask them to see this though before deciding as they may not be the look you are going for. I also have a range of cake stands available for hire or purchase and can discuss these with you at our design meeting. You can also see examples on my social media pages.

Can we freeze leftover wedding cake?

Yes. All of my wedding cakes are baked fresh to order so any cake that you have leftover can be taken home, cut into portions and frozen. I always think it's particularly nice to enjoy a slice of your wedding cake when you receive your photos and/or video back from your photographer and videographer and relive your special day.
