Can You Freeze Wedding Cake?

It is sometimes a worry that you will have too much leftover cake from your wedding. This can be a result of:


  • Your cake was bigger than you really needed for your guest numbers;

  • Guests weren’t really aware that cake was cut and available for them to go and get some;

  • It may have been served too late in the day and your guests were already so busy enjoying themselves and didn't take any.


It is true that not everyone will take cake, but there will also be some people that will go back for a second slice - especially if you have a different flavour in each tier as they’ll want to try them all!


When you enquire with me for your wedding cake, and again at your design consultation, I will ask for your guest numbers and advise on the right size of cake for you, generally based on around 80% of your numbers. You can of course have more if you'd prefer, perhaps you want to save a tier for a family celebration the next day, or you prefer the look of a larger cake for example.


But what if you do still have wedding cake leftover? What can you do?


For my couples, I always leave a cake box with the wedding venue so that any leftover cake can be given to them to take home, and as my cakes are freshly baked, my advice is to cut into portions, wrap and put in the freezer. Then you can defrost a slice whenever you fancy a treat. I always think it’s nice to have when your photos come back from your photographer so you can make an extra celebration looking through your photos and enjoying a slice of your wedding cake too.

Can all wedding cakes be frozen?


You will need to check with your cake maker if the cakes are able to be frozen as some bakers will bake and freeze in advance before decorating. There is nothing wrong with this and in my own experience I don’t find this affects the taste or texture of the cake, but it is not advised that you freeze them again.


How to freeze wedding cake


If you would like to freeze your wedding cake, my recommendation is to cut it into portions and wrap each slice in cling film and place into a freezer bag or airtight container, or separate slices with greaseproof paper and place into an airtight freezer container. This will allow you to take out individual portions whenever you want it.


If you would like to freeze an uncut cake, I recommend wrapping the whole cake in cling film and if possible store in a cake box in the freezer too. When you want to defrost it, take it out of the freezer but do not remove from the box or wrap until it is fully defrosted.

Labeling: Make sure to label each portion or container with the flavour and date it was frozen. This will help you keep track of how long it has been stored and ensure you consume it within a reasonable timeframe.


Avoid freezer burn: When wrapping the cake, try to minimise the amount of air trapped inside the wrapping to prevent freezer burn. Freezer burn can affect the texture and taste of the cake over time.


Thawing: When you're ready to enjoy a slice of your frozen wedding cake, it's important to defrost it properly. Remove the wrapped portion from the freezer and let it defrost in the fridge. This gradual process will help preserve the moisture and texture of the cake.


Serve with Care: Once defrosted, handle the cake portions gently and allow the cake to come to room temperature before serving for the best taste and texture.


Remember, while freezing your wedding cake allows you to savour the memories of your special day long after it's over, it's important to follow proper storage and thawing techniques to ensure it tastes just as delicious as it did on your wedding day.
